I am a certified Speech Language Pathologist and happen to be totally in agreement with your observations about Joanne S's nasality. It almost makes me want to change radio stations when she comes on (in fact, I think I actually may have done that once). Admittedly, your comments to Joanne's "good friend" were a little harsh, but I applaud your honesty. My feeling is that when someone's voice and/or speech pattern interferes with a listener's comprehension or appreciation of the message, it's a problem that needs attention. But what do I know - I've spent 35 years helping kids overcome /r/ distortions, but look where that speech "error" got Barbara Walters! Numerous radio personalities/commentators have what we used to call a "dark" or "retracted" /l/ (sounds like the /l/ is being swallowed, especially in blends like "clay" or blue"). Perception is in the eye of beholder I guess, and I imagine many people would tell me (and you) to "get a life" . . . . Blaire – you go, girl!! I am irritated beyond belief listening to her. In fact, as a contributor to NPR I was invited to a dinner with a guest speaker from NPR and I asked her if they ever had complaints about Joanne's voice. She got really defensive and nasty with me and said that "Joanne is the best health reporter on the beat" and I said "well I know alot about fashion but I am not hired a fashion model because I dont fit the look so why would someone who knows alot about health get a job in radio when her voice is so abrasive?" This woman froze me out, she said "Joanne happens to be a good friend of mine" and I said "so tell her to get some voice classes". I'm glad to know it's not just me! In fact, I found this post after searching to see if there was anything out there about Ann Taylor changing her pronunciation of "industrial." Someone (who matters) must have complained.
